    Progressive Network Deployment, Performance, and Control with Software-defined Networking

    The inflexible nature of traditional computer networks has led to tightly-integrated systems that are inherently difficult to manage and secure. New designs move low-level network control into software creating software-defined networks (SDN). Augmenting an existing network with these enhancements can be expensive and complex. This research investigates solutions to these problems. It is hypothesized that an add-on device, or shim could be used to make a traditional switch behave as an OpenFlow SDN switch while maintaining reasonable performance. A design prototype is found to cause approximately 1.5% reduction in throughput for one ow and less than double increase in latency, showing that such a solution may be feasible. It is hypothesized that a new design built on event-loop and reactive programming may yield a controller that is higher-performing and easier to program. The library node-openflow is found to have performance approaching that of professional controllers, however it exhibits higher variability in response rate. The framework rxdn is found to exceed performance of two comparable controllers by at least 33% with statistical significance in latency mode with 16 simulated switches, but is slower than the library node-openflow or professional controllers (e.g., Libfluid, ONOS, and NOX). Collectively, this work enhances the tools available to researchers, enabling experimentation and development toward more sustainable and secure infrastructur

    The Warm Spitzer Mission: Prospects for Studies of the Distant Universe

    IRAC excels at detecting distant objects. Due to a combination of the shapes of the spectral energy distributions of galaxies and the low background achieved from space, IRAC reaches greater depth in comparable exposure time at 3.6 and 4.5 micron than any ground- or space-based facility currently can at 2.2 micron. Furthermore, the longer wavelengths probed by IRAC enable studies of the rest-frame optical and near-infrared light of galaxies and AGN to much higher redshift than is possible from the ground. This white paper explores the merits of different survey strategies for studying the distant universe during the warm mission. A three-tiered approach serves a wide range of science goals and uses the spacecraft effectively: 1) an ultra-deep survey of ~0.04 square degrees to a depth of ~250 hrs (in conjunction with an HST/WFC3 program), to study the Universe at 7<z<14; 2) a survey of ~2 square degrees to the GOODS depth of 20 hrs, to identify luminous galaxies at z>6 and characterize the relation between the build-up of dark matter halos and their constituent galaxies at 2<z<6, and 3) a 500 square degree survey to the SWIRE depth of 120 s, to systematically study large scale structure at 1<z<2 and characterize high redshift AGN. One or more of these programs could conceivably be implemented by the SSC, following the example of the Hubble Deep Field campaigns. As priorities in this field continuously shift it is also crucial that a fraction of the exposure time remains unassigned, thus enabling science that will reflect the frontiers of 2010 and beyond rather than those of 2007.Comment: White paper to appear in "The Science Opportunities for the Warm Spitzer Mission". 15 page

    On the Stellar Populations in Faint Red Galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

    We study the nature of faint, red-selected galaxies at z ~ 2-3 using the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) and Spitzer IRAC photometry. We detect candidate galaxies to H < 26 mag, probing lower-luminosity (lower mass) galaxies at these redshifts. We identify 32 galaxies satisfying the (J - H) > 1.0 mag color selection, 16 of which have unblended [3.6um] and [4.5um] IRAC photometry. We derive photometric redshifts, masses, and stellar population parameters for these objects. We find that the selected objects span a diverse range of properties over a large range of redshifts, 1 < z < 3.5. A substantial fraction (11/32) appear to be lower-redshift (z < 2.5), heavily obscured dusty galaxies or edge-on spiral galaxies, while others (12/32) appear to be galaxies at 2 < z < 3.5 whose light at rest-frame optical wavelengths is dominated by evolved stellar populations. Interestingly, by including Spitzer data many candidates for galaxies dominated by evolved stellar populations are rejected, and for only a subset of the sample (6/16) do the data favor this interpretation. We place an upper limit on the space and stellar mass density of candidate massive evolved galaxies. The z > 2.5 objects that are dominated by evolved stellar populations have a space density at most one-third that of z ~ 0 red, early-type galaxies. Therefore, at least two-thirds of present-day early-type galaxies assemble or evolve into their current configuration at redshifts below 2.5. We find a dearth of candidates for low-mass galaxies at 1.5 < z < 3 that are dominated by passively evolving stellar populations even though the data should be sensitive to them; thus, at these redshifts, galaxies whose light is dominated by evolved stellar populations are restricted to only those galaxies that have assembled high stellar mass.[Abridged]Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, and 4 tables.     Correlating the Energetics and Atomic Motions of the Metal-Insulator Transition of M1 Vanadium Dioxide

    Materials that undergo reversible metal-insulator transitions are obvious candidates for new generations of devices. For such potential to be realised, the underlying microscopic mechanisms of such transitions must be fully determined. In this work we probe the correlation between the energy landscape and electronic structure of the metal-insulator transition of vanadium dioxide and the atomic motions occurring using first principles calculations and high resolution X-ray diffraction. Calculations find an energy barrier between the high and low temperature phases corresponding to contraction followed by expansion of the distances between vanadium atoms on neighbouring sub-lattices. X-ray diffraction reveals anisotropic strain broadening in the low temperature structure's crystal planes, however only for those with spacings affected by this compression/expansion. GW calculations reveal that traversing this barrier destabilises the bonding/anti-bonding splitting of the low temperature phase. This precise atomic description of the origin of the energy barrier separating the two structures will facilitate more precise control over the transition characteristics for new applications and devices.Comment: 11 Pages, 8 Figure

    Measurement of the Noise Resulting from the Interaction of Turbulence with a Lifting Surface

    An experimental study of the noise resulting from the interaction of an airfoil with incident turbulence is presented. The test models include NACA0015 airfoils of different chord lengths, a flat plate with a sharp leading edge, and an airfoil of same section as a reference Fowler flap. The airfoils are immersed in nearly isotropic turbulence. Two approaches for performing the noise measurements are used and compared. The effects that turbulence intensity and scales, airfoil geometry, velocity and angle of attack have on the incident turbulence interaction noise are examined. Detailed directivity measurements are presented. It is found that noise spectral levels beyond the peak frequency decrease more with decreasing airfoil leading edge sharpness, and that spectral peak level (at 0 deg. angle of attack) appears to be mostly controlled by the airfoil fs thickness and chord. Increase in turbulence scale and intensity are observed to lead to a uniform increase of the noise spectral levels with an LI(sup 2) dependence (where L is the turbulence longitudinal integral scale and I is the turbulence intensity). Noise levels are found to scale with the 6th power of velocity and the 2nd power of the airfoil chord. Sensitivity to changes in angle of attack appears to have a turbulence longitudinal integral scale to chord (C) ratio dependence, with large effects on noise for L/C greater than or equal to 1 and decreased effects as L/C becomes smaller than 1. For all L/C values, the directivity pattern of the noise resulting from the incident turbulence is seen to remain symmetric with respect to the direction of the mean flow until stall, at which point, the directivity becomes symmetric with respect to the airfoil chord. It is also observed that sensitivity to angle of attack changes is more pronounced on the model suction side than on the model pressure side, and in the higher frequency range of the spectra for the largest airfoils tested (L/C less than 0.24)

    A MMT/Hectospec Redshift Survey of 24 Micron Sources in the Spitzer First Look Survey

    We present a spectroscopic survey using the MMT/Hectospec fiber spectrograph of 24 micron sources selected with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the Spitzer First Look Survey. We report 1296 new redshifts for 24 micron sources, including 599 with f(24micron) > 1 mJy. Combined with 291 additional redshifts for sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), our observing program was highly efficient and is ~90% complete for i' 1 mJy, and is 35% complete for i' < 20.5 mag and 0.3 mJy < f(24micron) < 1 mJy. Our Hectospec survey includes 1078 and 168 objects spectroscopically classified as galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Combining the Hectospec and SDSS samples, we find 24 micron-selected galaxies to z < 0.98 and QSOs to z < 3.6, with mean redshifts of = 0.27 and =1.1.
